I realize I can use the cat. Devo's and I just used it on my acre and a half. This spring I would like to either buy or rent one and make some money before cutting and spring clean-ups. I didn't catch the catagory difference, that could be a problem. You might have to modify one to fit. Itsgottobegreen LawnSite Silver Member. Location Maryland.

It does a great job, and really helps in the pasture, and hay field. I used solid core cement blocks on it for weight, for good penetration.

I found mine by doing a lot of searching on the internet. I decided on the model I wanted, then scoured many pages of Google search, entering that model number. You'll get a lot more hits that way, then just searching dealer sites.

John Deere Tow-Behind Plug Aerator - LPPA40JD

This one was a nos sitting around for a couple years at a smaller dealer, and just wanted it off his lot. At the time, when others were asking approx.

To date, no broken spoons, or any other breakage, and that's running it over approx. Bought it used from local JD dealer. They said the guy that traded it in never used it. It was too big for his properties. It had never touched the ground. It was like new. Its a CA E model. E stands for Economy.

It has 6 spoons instead of 8 like the standard models have.

Aeration commonly refers to the process of using mechanized equipment to either puncture the soil with spikes spike aeration or remove approximately 1" X 2" cores of soil from the ground core aeration.

Spike aeration involves the use of an aeration attachment with spikes up to 3" or more in length. Spike aeration is sometimes used to address drainage issues in areas with turf. While using a lawn aerator is a common enough practice these days, many turf professionals restrict this important cultivation practice only to the spring or fall growing seasons.

While there is no doubt that using a lawn aerator during both seasons is recommended, aeration is, in fact, a practice that can and should be done year-round.

Gaining a broader understanding of the important benefits of year-round aeration can prove useful to turf professionals. It's important to point out that lawn aeration is not handled in the same manner in every region. Both the method of aeration and the timing are heavily influenced by location.

Our lawn aerator selection is sure to meet your needs. Aeration is most useful when turf plants are actively growing and their demand for oxygen is high. Ironically, the warm season is the same timeframe when the grounds professional has to fight for access with the sports field user or golfer, because of the perception that aeration can cause a disruption of play. In the spring, grounds professionals have their best opportunity to aggressively attack that agronomic evil of evils, compaction.

Compaction causes much-needed air pockets within the soil to close, providing less room for oxygen and water to move through the root zone.

As a side note: A variety of aeration methods solid-tine versus pulling cores, for exampleoften used in combination, can be used to combat this common hurdle. The temptation to over-simplify aeration practices should be avoided as there is no one perfect method for getting the job done; each practice has its own benefits and drawbacks. To eliminate hardpan conditions, a deep-tine lawn aerator method that shatters the soil or creates sideways fissures may be necessary; this approach, which creates a network of fairly large pores, is most useful in the spring. This greatly breaks up soil compaction and revitalizes lawns.

This technology saves money and reduces the number of replacements. There is minimal wear, which increases the rotor life. The sand weight tanks are two optional containers that give the core aerator an extra pressure boost when working with highly compacted soil.

This ensures that hard turf is completely aerated the first time. Skip to main content. Electronic Solutions. Rental Sales. View All Equipment.

Any help would be great. Would like to know the pro's and con's of the different brands. Thanks, Mike. Reply With Quote. I bought one to try this spring, and it worked just fine. I got about 3" of penetration with a little weight added. You can turn with the pull behind models, but have to go in a straight line with the 3pt hitch models. Re: 3 Pt Core Aerator Welcome to TBN I think the ones with the spoons that bolts to the independently rotating hubs is a much better design than the drum units.

KennyD www. Re: 3 Pt Core Aerator I appreciate your point of view but the reason I purchased a tractor with the 3-pt hitch was to use it.

There are limitations with a pull behind aerator; i. With a 3-pt all I have to do is raise the unit and then lower after I've crossed. Making turns isn't a problem either becasue the same goes there plus when you use an aerator while turning you tend to tear up the lawns more. Again thanks for your point of view. Like the ability of replacing the spoons if they are damaged plus the fact the hubs rotate.

Reminds me more on the line of the walk behind units I've used in the past. Any information on well made brands. Not too expensive, replaceable spoons, and it does a good job too.
